India Gets 20% Below-Average Monsoon Rains In The Week Ended July 17; Overall Deficiency Widens To 16%

NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - India received 20 percent less rainfall than the 50-year average in the week ending on Wednesday, July 17, data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed.

The deficiency was highest in central India - 68 percent - followed by 34 percent in the southern peninsula.

Of the ten sub-divisions of central India division, seven sub-divisions have reported "large deficient rainfall".

Lower monsoon for the week ended July 17 has increased the rainfall deficit since the start of the season to 16 percent from 14 percent last week.

The official monsoon season in the country starts on June 1 and ends on September 30.

Monsoon rains are crucial for farm output and economic growth, as about 55 percent of India's arable land is rain-fed, and agriculture forms about 15 percent of a $2.5-trillion economy that is the third biggest in Asia.

This year rains arrived in the southern state of Kerala a week late on June 8. The developing Cyclone Vayu in the Arabian Sea drew moisture from the monsoon and weakened its progress.

In late May the IMD forecast average rainfall in 2019, while the country's only private forecaster, Skymet, has predicted below-normal rainfall.

A normal, or average, monsoon means rainfall between 96 percent and 104 percent of a 50-year average of 89 cm (35 inches) during the four-month monsoon season, according to the IMD's classification.
