Mumbai (Commodities control) – Domestic Chana moved up for second straight day in spot markets across the country on Tuesday following firm cues from futures, slow domestic arrivals despite higher progressive sowing. However, sale in Chana dal was still slack.

Australia origin Chana at Mumbai and Mundra port pared early losses during closing session by Rs.50 to 5,050/100Kg respectively on some fresh lower level buying support, following firm cues from futures despite regular supply from overseas.

Chana for December delivery on National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) was settled higher 1.4 percent or Rs 67 up at Rs 4,911/100kg. The contract had slide to Rs 4,790 and touched a high of Rs 4,939.

In forward business, new crop of Australia Chana priced at $745 per ton for November-December shipment.

Australian Chana dal priced flat at Rs 6,200/100 Kg due to slow trade from wholesalers/retailers counters.

Domestic Chana dal of Maharashtra also ruled unchanged at Rs 6,300 and regular Chana dal at Rs 6,200/100Kg. Chana besan variety also offered unchanged at Rs 3,720/50Kg. Vatana besan at Rs 1,720/50 Kg and Vatana dal at Rs 2,850.

Kabuli Chana prices of all counts remained weak by Rs 100-200/100Kg in Indore market amid absence of trade activity, higher inflow, and sufficient supply from overseas. Supply totaled at 5,000Bags (Each Bag=100Kgs) today at Madhya Pradesh out of which 2,500 Bags arrived at Indore spot market against 2,100 Bags in the previous trade session.

As per market talk, government in Rajasthan likely to liquidate Chana procured stock in Bikaner and surrounding areas around 42761 MT from Buffer stock at market price.

According to sources, prices of chana were in oversold and lower rates may attract buyers due to slow domestic arrivals and forecast of lower yield in Australia. Short term rise can be witnessed in the prices as still three month left for arrivals of new crop (February) . But, prices unlikely to sustain at higher rates due to regular overseas arrivals, slack demand in processed Chana since alternate option of cheapest dal such as Matar dal is available.

Also, the higher progressive sowing, expectation of bumper crop and lower prices below MSP in other pulses these year, and reluctantness of stockiest to keep their stock in bearish market will not help Chana prices to sustain higher.
