MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - The small cardamom gained further last week on fear of crop fall this season due to erratic weather conditions prevailing in this aromatic spice growing regions of Kerala.

It was expected that this year crop would be a bumper one but, instead,it is unlikely to be so because of the changes in the climatic conditions so far. It has negatively affected the flowering and fruit setting process in the plants, growers said.

Apprehending a fall in output, at a time when the inventories in the north Indian markets have been depleted, all were actively covering now what ever material arrived in the market. This phenomenon has aided the recent price rise, trade sources said.

However, the supply trend would be known from next week when the picking enters the second round, they said.

Exportable grade cardamom was not available in required volume and the exporters were active in the markets. They are reported to have bought an estimated 15-20 tonnes.

Arrivals have gone up to 252 tonnes last week from 191 tonnes  the previous week.

The weekly auction average increased to 935.65 a kg from Rs879.50 a kg the previous week.

Individual auction average was vacillating between Rs903 and Rs968 a kg.

Total arrivals during the current season up to July 14, 2017 were at 19,478 tonnes and the sales were at 18,532 tonnes.

Individual auction average for the season as on July 14 was at Rs1,095.86 a kg.

Prices today at Bodinayakannur, the main trading hub for the aromatic spice, were (in Rs/kg) : 8mm bold 1,350; 7 -8mm 1,150- 1,200; 6-7mm 950 ; below 6 mm 850.
