MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - The Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) in its third estimate further slashed India’s 2015-16 cotton crop output estimate to 338 (170kgs each) lakh bales against second estimate of 365 lakh bales. The country has produced around 386 lakh bales of cotton in 2014-15.

Textile Commissioner, Dr. Kavita Gupta attributed the 7.39 percent drop in production estimate to the first back-to-back drought in the country, hitting productivity followed whitefly attack in North India.

It has also slashed domestic consumption from 323 lakh bales compared to 308 lakh bales.

CAB has projected 2015-16 closing stocks at 43 lakh bales compared to 66 lakh bales year ago. The closing of 2014-15 was revised upwards 52 lakh bales to 66 lakh bales as it has reduced domestic cotton consumption for same period.

Production in Punjab has been lowered to 7.5 lakh bales for 2015-16 compared to 12 lakh bales in 2014-15. Output in Gujarat has been slashed to 94 lakh bales compared to 108 lakh bales last year and 101 lakh bales estimated earlier.
