MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - US Department of Agriculture in its July estimates reduced cotton production at 27.5 million bales (480lb each) compared with 28 million bales in June. However the production forecast is still up at 26.8 million bales in 2015-16.
It said in its latest World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates Report (WASDE) that the area harvested is estimated to decrease to 11.5 million hectares, down 3.4 percent from 2015-16 due to a decline in area planted in northern India which comprises about 10 percent of total cotton production.
However better yield due to good monsoon likely to offset acreage losses.
The forecast yield this month is 521 kilograms per hectare. The northern cotton areas of Punjab and Haryana have completed sowing as of the end of May. The Punjab government forecasts that cotton production was 42 percent lower than last year, whereas the Haryana state government forecasts a 14 percent decline in planting, the report said.
The decrease in area planted is attributed to farmers’ concerns over disease and pests such as whitefly, late monsoon rains, and lower cotton prices. Cotton sowing is ongoing in the rest of India until September.
USDA India Supply Demand Table In Running Bales (480Lb Each)
India import of cotton is also estimated by USDA at 0.95 million bales versus 0.7 million bales projected last month, but flat compared with 2015-16. Higher domestic prices and tight supply has mainly prompted USDA to increase its numbers.
