MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Turkey, the second largest cotton buyer in the world, is likely to import 4.016 million bales cotton (480 lb), 9 percent more cotton in 2015/16 season.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its recent attache report estimated that cotton output in Turkey may drop nearly 17 percent to 2.7 million bales in 2015/16 compared to last year.
Lower planting of cotton as a result of lower returns on cotton compared to other crops such as corn in cotton growing regions.
The Turkish government’s initiative to boost planting via increasing production bonus did little to encourage farmers to plant more cotton.
Rains also had adverse effects during the picking season, mainly lowering quality. Planting next year will depend on this crop year’s prices and returns, but so far lower local production is said to be supporting local prices.
Turkey imported nearly 105,000 metric tons (MT) of cotton during the first two months of the marketing season 2015, which is about 20 percent up from last season. Of the total imports, 48,000 MT were U.S. cotton. Turkmenistan (19,000 MT) and Burkina Faso (12,000 MT) were other leading suppliers.
NOTE: Area In 1,000 Hectares. Other figures In 1,000 Bales (480 lb each)
