Delhi (Commoditiescontrol) - Despite lower acreage of cotton recorded as of now, the fibre production is expected to rise this year due to better yield and good monsoon, as per the Bathinda based private agency prediction. The agency tracks sowing, output and market trend in cotton.
As per the agency’s report, cotton sowing has covered 4.32 lakh hectares as of now while last year’s figure was 4.53 lakh hectares. However, output may increase with the expectations of better yield as monsoon appears favourable for the crop. If weather condition remains favorable, cotton production in Punjab will be 15 lakh bales (170kg each) in the ongoing crop season against 12 lakh bales a year ago, the agency suggested.
Bathinda’s agency has also estimated higher cotton production in Haryana nearly 24 lakh bales, one lakh bales up from last year’s 23 lakh bales, though the report has acknowledged a fall in acreage of 55, 000 thousand hectares to 5.85 lakh hectares of cotton sowing as of now as against last year’s figure was 6.40 lakh hectares.
On the other hand, cotton acreage has expanded in Rajasthan. As per the agency’s report, land under cotton cultivation in Rajasthan is 5.26 lakh hectares this year while it was only 4.90 lakh hectares last season. On the basis of higher acreage, the agency has estimated 18 lakh bales of cotton output in Rajasthan for the ongoing crop season while last year’s record was 16 lakh bales, says the report.
North India produced around 56 lakh bales cotton during 2014-15 and acreage was estimated at 15.05 lakh hectares, according to Cotton Advisory Board (CAB). Production in Punjab was pegged at 14 lakh bales, while Haryana produced around 25 lakh bales followed by 17 lakh bales in Rajasthan.
