MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - India’s exports of cotton to the world’s leading consumer, China in June, 2015 saw a slump of nearly 91 percent to 5,767 tons compared to last year, as per official customs data. It exported around 174,866 tons cotton to China during the first five months of the year (January-June), down 74.72 percent compared to last year.
Similarly, exports from the U.S. to China in June were recorded at 84,028 tons, up 83.38 percent from the same month last year, while between January-June U.S. cotton imports in China rose 10.94 percent on year at 436,542 tons.
But, China’s cotton imports from Brazil in June showed a rise of 47.19 percent to 5,368 tons. The major factor behind the growth is attributed to the weakness in Brazilian currency. Also, during the first five month between Jan-Jun, China imported around 74,192 tons of cotton from Brazil, up 396.42 percent on year.
The official customs data showed that China’s cotton imports saw a drastic fall in the month and the first 5 months of the year - Jan-May.
In the month, China's total cotton imports were at 161,775 tons, down 25.85 percent than same month last year. During Jan-Jun period, the country’s cotton imports posted a drop of 32.99 percent at 933,779 tons compared to a year ago, the customs data showed.
