MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - India’s exports of cotton to the world’s leading consumer, China in May, 2015 saw a slump of 74.19 percent to 18,673 tonnes, as per official customs data. Meanwhile, it exported around 169,109 tonnes cotton during the first five months of the year, Jan-May, which is down 72.91 percent compared to last year.
Exports from the U.S. to China in May were recorded at 95,218 tonnes, a fall of 56.27 percent from the same month last year, while between Jan-May U.S. cotton imports in China saw a slump of 1.4 percent on year at 352,534 tonnes.
But, China’s cotton imports from Brazil in May showed a rise of 35.86 percent to 3,244 tonnes. The major factor behind the growth is attributed to the weakness in Brazilian currency. Also, during the first five month between Jan-May, China imported around 68,824 tonnes of cotton, up 509 percent on year.
The official customs data showed that China’s cotton imports saw a drastic fall in the month and the first 5 months of the year - Jan-May.
In the month, China's total cotton imports were at 163,073 tonnes, down 14.83 percent than same month last year. During Jan-May period, the country’s cotton imports posted a drop of 34.3 percent at 772,036 tonnes compared to a year ago, the customs data showed.
