Flood Washes Out 3.85 Lakh Hectares Crop In Bihar

NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) – Flood situation has turned grim once again in Bihar after the major portion of the state received torrential rains last week. The rise in water level of Ganga, Kosi and several other rivers has affected kharif crops in the state again and crop loss is expected to increase. On the other side, the recent rains helped in improving deficient rainfall data in the state.

Previously, the standing crops in 3.85 lakh hectares are reported to be washed out in the flood affected area of Bihar, according to agriculture department survey. The state government has assessed the crop loss of over Rs. 812.27 crores due to flood. As per the assessment of crop loss, the government has estimated a compensation of Rs. 442.68 crores for the farmers.

The farming of major kharif crop is almost complete in the state and farmers are planning to grow rabi crops in the field remained vacant due to deficient rains in some area. Paddy acreage has declined as compared to last year due to less rains in August. However, maize area has expanded.

As on September 7, 2016, paddy transplantation was complete in over 32.85 lakh hectares of land in Bihar in the ongoing kharif season while paddy acreage on the corresponding date last year was 33.23 lakh hectares, according to the data received from the Directorate of Statistics & Evaluation, Bihar (SASA) that releases estimates area, production and productivity in respect of principal crops of food grains, oilseeds, sugarcane, fibers and important commercial and horticulture crops.

The government of Bihar has set a target for 34 lakh hectares for paddy farming this season of which 96.62 percent of area is reported under paddy crop, as per the latest sowing coverage report.

In the current kharif season, maize acreage has achieved nearly 91.24 percent of the target as area under maize is reported nearly 4.34 lakh hectares so far against 4.26 lakh hectares in the corresponding year ago time. The state government has set a target of 4.75 lakh hectares for maize crop this year.

As far as rainfall is concerned, Bihar received 24 percent deficient rains in June but it has improved in July with 4 percent above normal rains. But monsoon remained quite discouraging in ongoing month of August which recorded 48 percent departure of rainfall in August.

How
ever, it improved in the first week of September and recorded 100 percent above normal rains as of September 7, 2016. Hence, total rainfall received in the current monsoon season remained 13 percent below normal in the state, as per the latest report.

Normally 857.1mm rainfall is received in Bihar till September 7 while 743.5 mm has been received so far, however, it remained better than last year when only 668.9 mm rainfall was received during corresponding period year ago period. The crop is reported in good condition after recent rains in the state.
