India’s Kharif Acreage Increased 7.15 Percent, Reached At 1082.22 Lakh Hectare NEW DELHI (Commodities control) India’s Kharif sowing area increased 7.15 percent to 1082.22 lakh hectare till 28 August compared to 1009.98 lakh hectare of last year’s sown area during same period. Out of total sown area, acreage of rice increased 9.99 percent to 389.81 lakh ha compared to 354.41 lakh ha. of same period of last kharif season. During current kharif season, area of pulses increased 4.6 percent. Mostly kharif crops have registered higher sowing area in current season.

Higher sowing acreage is attributed to more active involvement of farmers of the country. It is noted that sowing area is increasing due to involvement of more people in farming activities. Participation of migrant workers caused higher farming activities as they were left jobless due to lockdown amid covid-19 and they returned to their native places.

Rice

About 389.81 lakh ha area coverage under rice has been reported compared to last year (354.41 lakh ha). Thus 35.40 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Telangana (10.06 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (5.23 lakh ha), Bihar (5.22 lakh ha), Jharkhand (5.05 lakh ha), West Bengal (4.04 lakh ha), Karnataka (2.29 lakh ha), Odisha (1.26 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (1.12 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.68 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.65 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.46 lakh ha), Manipur (0.35 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.31 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.26 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.18 lakh ha), Haryana (0.18 lakh ha), Assam (0.15 lakh ha), Kerala (0.01 lakh ha) and Sikkim (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Punjab (1.84 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.16 lakh ha), Tripura (0.10 lakh ha) and J&K (0.04 lakh ha).


Pulses

About 134.57 lakh ha area coverage under pulses has been reported compared to last year (128.65 lakh ha). Thus 5.91 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Karnataka (2.91 lakh ha), Maharashtra (2.19 lakh ha), Telangana (1.42 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.64 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.55 lakh ha), Odisha (0.27 lakh ha), Bihar (0.22 lakh ha), Haryana (0.22 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.13 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.08 lakh ha), Punjab (0.04 lakh ha), Assam (0.02 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.01 lakh ha) and West Bengal (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Madhya Pradesh (1.51 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.90 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.12 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.12 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.07 lakh ha), Manipur (0.03 lakh ha), Sikkim (0.01 lakh ha), J&K (0.01 lakh ha) and Tripura (0.01 lakh ha).


Coarse cereals


About 176.89 lakh ha area coverage under coarse cereals has been reported compared to last year (172.49 lakh ha). Thus 4.40 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Karnataka (2.89 lakh ha), Rajasthan (1.67 lakh ha), Punjab (0.85 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.54 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.39 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.37 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.16 lakh ha), Odisha (0.10 lakh ha), J&K (0.10 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.09 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.06 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.06 lakh ha), Haryana (0.06 lakh ha), Bihar (0.03 lakh ha), Assam (0.03 lakh ha) and Uttarakhand (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Telangana (2.75 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.07 lakh ha), Himachal Pradesh (0.02 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.02 lakh ha) and Arunachal Pradesh (0.01 lakh ha).


Oilseeds


About 193.29 lakh ha area coverage under oilseeds has been reported compared to last year (170.99 lakh ha). Thus 22.30 lakh ha more area has been covered last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Andhra Pradesh (2.90 lakh ha), Gujarat (6.28 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (4.51 lakh ha), Maharashtra (3.33 lakh ha), Karnataka (2.52 lakh ha), Rajasthan (2.51 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.56 lakh ha), Odisha (0.17 lakh ha), Chhattisgarah (0.03 lakh ha), Punjab (0.03 lakh ha), Haryana (0.03 lakh ha) and West Bengal (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Telangana (0.24 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.07 lakh ha), Bihar (0.07 lakh ha), J&K (0.01 lakh ha) and Jharkhand (0.01 lakh ha).


Sugarcane

About 52.29 lakh ha area coverage under sugarcane has been reported compared to last year (51.68 lakh ha). Thus 0.61 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (1.51 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.11 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.11 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.01 lakh ha) and Punjab (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Tamil Nadu (0.35 lakh ha), Bihar (0.34 lakh ha), Haryana (0.14 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.10 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.06 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.06 lakh ha), Odisha (0.04 lakh ha), Telangana (0.03 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.02 lakh ha) and Uttarakhand (0.02 lakh ha).


Jute & Mesta


About 6.97 lakh ha area coverage under Jute & Mesta has been reported compared to last year (6.86 lakh ha). Thus 0.11 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the State of West Bengal (0.17 lakh ha) and Nagaland (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Bihar (0.03 lakh ha), Meghalaya (0.02 lakh ha), Assam (0.01 lakh ha) and Odisha (0.01 lakh ha).


Cotton


About 128.41 lakh ha area coverage under cotton has been reported compared to last year (124.90 lakh ha). Thus 3.50 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Telangana (6.15 lakh ha), Punjab (0.99 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.96 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.53 lakh ha), Haryana (0.36 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.35 lakh ha) and Odisha (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the State of Gujarat (3.76 lakh ha), Maharashtra (1.67 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.35 lakh ha) and Tamil Nadu (0.02 lakh ha).
