MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - India pulses import as on October of the current fiscal year starting from April (2017-18) was higher 39.33% at 38.89 lakh tonnes against 27.91 lakh tonnes same period a year ago, according to commernce ministry.
The top destinations were Canada (13.31LT), Australia (7.86LT), Myanmar (5.26LT), Russia (3.65LT), Ukraine (2.02LT).
India is the largest importer, producer and consumer of pulses in the world.
India government in recent months has put quantitative restrictions (Tur-Urad/Moong) and also raised import duty (Chana-Masoor-Matar) in a bid to curb import to arrest fall in prices due to higher imports to safeguard farmers interest.
Import of pulses in the country is expected to decline significantly in the coming months due to various measures implemented by the government.
India produced 229.5 lakh tonnes of pulses during 2016-17 and estimated to harvest 229 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 season, which is closer to meet domestic demand. India annual pulses consumption ranges between 220-250 lakh tonnes.
