MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Tur production in Karnataka, second largest producer in the country, during the kharif season 2017 is estimated to decline 45.30% on year to 6.63 lakh tonnes from 12 lakh tonnes a year ago, according to first advance estimate data released by state agriculture department official.
The sharp fall in Tur production was attributed to lower acreage amid sharp decline in its prices due to record production last kharif season, which promoted farmers to shift to better remerative crops like cotton.
Simiarly, Kharif maize output is estimated to drop 6.13% to 28 lakh tonnes against 29.86 lakh tonnes previous year.
However cotton production is pegged 7.30% higher to 10.73 lakh bales (170kg each) from 10 lakh bales a year ago.
Production of food grain in the state is seen falling 11% on year to 69.9 lakh tonnes.
Among oilseeds, output of groundnut is estimatd 23% on year to 1.90 lakh tonnes, while production of sunflower is likely to decline 14% on year at 0.68 lakh tonnes.
