MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - India pulses import during FY 2016-17 (Apr-Mar) rose 13.32% at 66.61 lakh tonnes against 58.78 lakh tonnes despite higher production in the country, according to commerce ministry.
India produced 224 lakh tonnes of pulses in 2016-17, sharply up from 163.5 lakh tonnes in 2015-16, according to third advance estimates.
Matar share in total pulses import stood at 47.63%, followed by chana at 16.22%, Masur at 12.45, Tur at 10.56%, Mung/Urad at 8.62 and others at 4.52%.
Though pulses import in FY 2016-17 was better, but likely to decline in FY 2017-18 due to ample stocks in the country and prospects of better pulses production in 2017-18 due to forecast of normal monsoon.
