New Delhi (Commoditiescontrol) – Gone were the days when sugar industry of the country was reeling under financial crisis two years back and there is no issue of cash flow in the market now, therefore, sugar mill owners don’t have any problem to pay cane prices to the farmers within 14-day mandatory deadline, said TARUN SAWHNEY, Vice-Chairman & MD, Triveni Engineering. He advocated government decision and several sugar mills are paying well in advance of 14 days.

The sugar mills and farmers have very close relationship and any development in the sugar industry can’t be possible by ignoring issues and interest of the farmers as industry will grow if farmers increase the acreage of sugarcane and nurture the plants well, this is possible when they get money on time, he added.

The sugarcane planting season has begun when farmers need money for seed, fertilizers and other related work, hence, enforcement of the policy by the newly elected government will help in protecting farmers’ interest and sugar industry as well, said Sawhney.

He claimed all cane dues have been paid well in advance by his group of companies that owns several sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh.

After taking charge as CM of Uttar Pradesh, Adityanath Yogi, in his first interview with RSS mouthpiece Panchajanya, stressed the issues of cane growers of the state and said that sugar mills have been asked to transfer prices of sugarcane directly to the bank account of the farmers within 14-day deadline as mandatory to clear farmers’ dues. The sugar mills defying the order will be issued RCs and the state government will take strict action against them, he said.

It should be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised with farmers during his campaign for Assembly Polls that BJP govt in the state if elected, would heed issues of cane growers.

Addressing an election rally in Meerut, he assured the farmers that if BJP comes to power in UP, cane dues will be cleared in 14 days.

The sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh produced over 78 lakh tonnes of sweetener in first six months of this sugar season 2016-17 (October-September), nearly 20 percent higher than last year and total output in the state in the current season is estimated nearly 85 lakh tonnes as 75 mills are still operative on adequate supply of sugarcane. Uttar Pradesh has outpaced Maharashtra in sugar production this year as almost all sugar mills have shut down production this season in Maharashtra due to unavailability of sugarcane as back-to-back droughts for two years affected sugarcane crop in the state where sugar output is estimated only 42 lakh tonnes.
