MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Australia 2016-17 chana (Chickpea) likely to rise sharply at 14.07 lakh tonnes from 10.06 lakh tonnes estimated in 2015-16, according to latest estimate released by Abares.
Abares in latest forecast pegged lentil crop at record 6.20 lakh tonnes, up 140 percent at 2.58 lakh tonnes a year ago.
Chickpea production is estimated to have increased by 55 per cent in 2016–17 to 850,000 tonnes in Queensland, largest chana producing province in Australia. Area planted to chickpeas is estimated to have risen by 40 percent to a record 475,000 hectares in response to expected higher returns compared with other winter crops. Despite difficulties with excess moisture in some regions, overall yields and quality were better than expected.
Lentil production in South Australia is estimated to have doubled in 2016−17 to 420,000 tonnes as a result of record yields. Planted area is estimated to have increased by 10 percent because of favourable expected returns at the time of sowing.
