MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - India imports around 96,978 metric tonnes during November 1-26, 2016, sharply up from 36,062.15 metric imported in whole November 2015, according to data received from Exim website.
Australia was the top shipper of the commodity with 62,123 metric tonnes, while Russia and Tanzania were the other major exporters of chana. Most of the commodity was received at Mundra port followed by Nhava Sheva.
India imports of pulses rose mainly due to poor stocks in the country and higher prices in the local market that has prompted importers to source from various destinations to met domestic demand.
Australia chana in ready delivery was last traded at Rs 7,800/100kg at the benchmark Mumbai market, while February-March delivery was priced at $830 per tonne (Rs 56,333 per tonne).
India imported around 418,877 metric tonnes of chana during financial year 2015-16 (April-March), according to commerce ministry, but this season chana import is likely to rise sharply due to tight stock positions followed by higher production in Australia.
Meanwhile rabi sowing of chana in the country has shown good progress, which as on December 23 stood at 89.21 lakh hectares against 80.12 lakh hectares same period a year ago, according to agriculture ministry.
