Mumbai(Commoditiescontrol) - The Maharashtra government today clarified that the hike in prices of soybean and cotton seeds would remain, even as the increase in prices of other kharif crops being sold by Mahabeej would be rolled back.
"While the government has rolled back the seed price hike by the Mahabeej, it should be noted that cotton and soybean seeds have been excluded from the stay (on price hike)," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was quoted as saying in a release.
Earlier, Fadnavis had directed Mahabeej, a state-government enterprise, to roll back the hike in seed prices after farmer unions and opposition parties strongly opposed the move.
Fadnavis clarified that farmers who had purchased the seed at higher prices would be refunded the difference between existing and revised prices in their bank accounts.
Mahabeej had raised seed prices due to a rise in procurement and other costs, as prices of these commodities had increased sharply in spot markets recently.
