JAIPUR (Commoditiescontrol) Fenugreek (Methi) crop is not expected to damage by untimely rain in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as feared earlier. Clear sunny weather after rain rescued the crop so its prices are not expected to rise in the days to come. Farmers had received handsome returns in the commodity last year prompted them to increase acreage this year.
There were fears of crop damage from recent unseasonal rain in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The rain was experienced at the producing belts from beginning to middle of March. Few trade experts in the markets raised concern of around 10-15 per cent crop loss due to recent untimely rains, but agriculture experts said that rain can affect quality, but not quantity.
Fenugreek was sold at Rs. 5,365 per quintal in Mandsaur and Rs. 6,800 per quintal in Neemuch of Madhya Pradesh (as per quality) last week. It was priced at Rs. 5,500 in Jodhpur and Rs. 4,000 per quintal in Kota of Rajasthan. Yellow fenugreek is traded at Rs. 4,250 per quintal in Unjha market of Gujarat.
Fenugreek is being quoted at 1.59 USD per kilogram in the international market. But prices may fall when new arrival gather pace. Higher acreage and large carry over stock will not let the prices to stay at high level. According to National Horticulture Board’s first advance estimate, fenugreek is sown in 66,000 hectare (ha) in the country and production likely at 90,000 tonnes. Last year, fenugreek acreage was 65,940 ha. and production was estimated at 89,610 tonnes. Around 112,870 tonnes fenugreek was produced in 93,000 ha. during crop year 2012-13.
According to the figures of Indian Spices Board, fenugreek export increased to 35,575 tonnes in 2013-14 compared to 13,811 tonnes in 2012-13. Around 32,000 tonnes export target is set for current year 2014-15. The country has exported around 10,950 tonnes of fenugreek between April to September 2014 from the set target, down from 18,289 tonnes in the same period last year. However exporters anticipate that it will be very difficult to achieve export target this year.
