Possible Temperature Record Break in 2023/2024 Due to El Nino and Climate Change

MUMBAI, April 20 (Commoditiescontrol):Climate scientists warn that the world could break a new average temperature record in 2023 or 2024, mainly due to climate change and the expected return of the El Nino weather phenomenon.

According to climate models, after experiencing three years of the La Nina weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean, which generally results in slightly cooler global temperatures, the world will experience a return to El Nino, which is the warmer counterpart, later this year.

During El Nino, winds blowing west along the equator slow down, and warm water is pushed east, creating warmer surface ocean temperatures. This warming trend is usually associated with record-breaking temperatures globally. Although it's unclear if this will happen in 2023 or 2024, Carlo Buontempo, director of the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, believes it is more likely than not.

Climate models indicate that the world will experience a return to El Nino conditions in the late summer, and a strong El Nino may develop towards the end of the year.

In 2016, the world experienced the hottest year on record, coinciding with a strong El Nino. However, climate change has caused extreme temperatures even in years without the phenomenon. The last eight years have been the world's hottest on record, reflecting the longer-term warming trend driven by greenhouse gas emissions.

Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, warns that El Nino-fueled temperatures could worsen the climate change impacts that countries are already experiencing, such as severe heatwaves, drought, and wildfires. Moreover, Otto says, "If El Niño does develop, there is a good chance 2023 will be even hotter than 2016 – considering the world has continued to warm as humans continue to burn fossil fuels."
