NEW DELHI, June 24 (Commoditiescontrol) - Area sown to summer (kharif) crops was lagging behind by 23.81 percent at 140.52 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing kharif season of the crop year 2022-23, according to data released by the agriculture ministry on Friday.
Farmers had planted kharif crops in 184.44 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Sowing of kharif crops begins with the onset of southwest monsoon from June.
As per the latest data, area sown to paddy (the main kharif crop) remained lower at 19.59 lakh hectare till June 24 of this kharif season as against 36.03 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Area sown to oilseeds was down 47.43 percent at 11.78 lakh hectare as against 22.41 lakh hectare over the same period a year ago.
Area sown to pulses was down 36.12 percent at 8.70 lakh hectare so far this kharif season, from 13.62 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
In cash crops, area sown to cotton was also down 14.75 percent at 31.83 lakh hectare so far this kharif season, against 37.34 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Acreage under sugarcane was however slightly higher at 50.74 lakh hectare as against 50.16 lakh hectare.
In case of coarse cereals, the area coverage was 11.08 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing kharif season, as against 18.06 lakh hectare in the year-ago.
