Weekly: Most Pulses Extend Gains This Week, Urad Reports Mixed Trend

MUMBAI (Commodities control) – Prices of most pulses, such as Tur, Chana, Kabuli Chickpea, Masoor, Moong and White Pea surged for the week ended 17th April, 2021 amid mills’ buying activity on immediate crushing requirement, while Urad prices traded mixed on thin volume.

Burma Lemon Tur:

Tur Lemon variety of Burma-origin gained Rs 50 to Rs 6,750-6,800/100Kg in Mumbai, due to selected mills’ buying on immediate requirement for crushing, less imported ready stock and domestic arrivals

Similarly, domestic variety of Tur was also up by Rs 50 to Rs 7,300-7,325/100Kg in bilty trade at benchmark market of Akola.

However, the demand in tur dals has weakened due to new restrictions after surge in Covid cases across the country however tur supply remains equally tight.

Burma Tur Lemon-Linkhey varieties priced each around $820 per ton, respectively on CNF basis. But, no sellers were active.

As on April 14, 2021, NAFED has procured 10,987.26 MT of Tur at MSP of Rs 6,000 in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

As per market sources, Tur prices are likely to get support as sellers were inactive. Fundamentals of Tur are strong due to lower yields, lesser old procured stock with government. Although, overseas imports will arrive at regular intervals as the government already issued a total of 6 lakh tonnes quota.

Burma Urad:

Prices of Burma Urad FAQ moved higher by Rs 150 at Rs 7,500/100Kg in Mumbai, due to millers' trade on immediate requirement for crushing.

On other hand, Burma Urad SQ-FAQ varieties in Chennai declined each by Rs 25-50 at Rs 8,025/100Kg and Rs 7,300, respectively on slack mills’ trade and regular overseas supplies.

Burma Urad FAQ-SQ varieties offered around $760 per ton & $880-$890, respectively on CNF basis for Chennai against delivery before 30th April. Good parity in import was seen. Ready stock of imported Urad at Chennai is around 1000-1200 containers.

Around 500-550 containers of Urad likely to reach Chennai port from Burma before 30th April.

Centre extends the last date for import of 1.5 Lakh MT of Urad for the fiscal year 2020-21, from 31st March, 2021 to 30th April.

Chana Kantewala (Indore):

Chana prices extended rally by Rs 200 at Rs 5,575-5,600/100Kg in Indore following firm cues from futures, due to improved buying activity as demand and sale counter in dal-besan witnessed good action this week.

Prices are likely to get further support due to lower output and lesser inventories due to rising covid cases across India. The pandemic-led restrictions have led to call upon partial or complete lockdown in few states to control the spread.

Meanwhile, Ramadan demand is kicking in and has led Chana millers to rush for more stocks. Chana availability is tighter as the fresh arrivals diverted to NAFED since its buying was initiated. Rajasthan arrivals are lower than anticipated earlier which is leading to expectations of tighter stocks post peak arrivals. The processors and stockist looking to accumulate chana stocks.

As on April 14, 2021, NAFED has procured 248,990.97 MT of Chana at MSP of Rs 5,100 in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Similarly, Tanzania-origin Chana in Mumbai also moved higher by Rs 200 at Rs 5,250-5,300/100Kg amid mill buying activity.

Russia and Sudan-origin Kabuli Chickpea prices traded higher by Rs 250-350 at Rs 5,650-5,700/100Kg and Rs 5,550-5,600, respectively.

42-44 & 44-46 count Kabuli Chana also sharply up by Rs 750-800 each at Rs 10450/100Kg and Rs 10300, respectively.

Imported Masoor (Mumbai):

Canada crimson variety Masoor along with Australia Masoor in Mumbai continued to trade higher by Rs 150-175 each at Rs 6,225-6,275/100Kg and Rs 6,375, respectively on improved mills’ buying support and depleting stock of imported Masoor.

Similarly, Canada crimson variety Masoor at Hajira-Mundra port inched up by Rs 150-175 at Rs 6,225/100kg and Rs 6,150, respectively, while at Kandla it was priced higher by Rs 150 at Rs 6,100/100Kg.

Demand and sale counter in processed Masoor witnessed good activity. Masoor dal traded higher at Rs 7,550/100Kg.

Consumption demand is likely to increase due to cheaper masoor as compared with Tur. Amid lesser availability of Tur, crushing is more likely to shift towards Masoor.

Moreover, depleting stock of imported Masoor and no overseas supply due to higher parity is likely to further support prices. Corporates and importers continue to accumulate stocks in the domestic market and shifted to crush domestic Masoor due to less imported stock.

There is sharp tightness in availability of Masoor due to below expectation arrivals and less inventories due to rising covid cases across India has led to call upon partial or complete lockdown in few states to control the spread.

White Pea (Kanpur):

New White Pea prices gained Rs 100-150 at Rs 5,250/100Kg (dal quality) and Rs 5,450 (40% filter quality) at Kanpur market, due to good demand from local and outstation markets.

As per Kanpur based trader, prices of White Pea is likely to get further support due to negligible carryover stock. Millers-traders along with stockiest and bulk buying from big companies were active in purchasing as the pipeline is empty.

Moreover, imported White pea stock is also negligible after India banned import of the yellow peas. Customs department has not released the imported pulses yet, as the release will contradict government’s existing policy.

Moong (Jaipur):

Moong prices moved higher by Rs 100 at Rs 6,600-7,500/100Kg at Jaipur market of Rajasthan, as per quality, amid mill buying on immediate requirement for crushing.

Moreover, demand and sale counters in processed Moong reported good participation and traded higher by Rs 100 at Rs 8,800-8,900/100Kg.

Around 28,392 MT of Moong from various origin, such as Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania, Argentina, South Africa, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Venezuela had arrived at JNPT in March month.

New summer Moong crop is expected to arrive from April end-May at Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Acreage is expected to be remain higher compared to last year.

Farmers were still holding kharif crop Moong in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Arrivals and supplies stocked in godowns, meanwhile, are enough to offset current requirements.

The Central Government notifies annual quota for the fiscal year 2021-22 for import of 1.5 Lakh MT of Moong.
