Weekly: Most Pulses Rise Over the Week Amid Mill Purchases, Market Eyes Lockdown Restrictions

MUMBAI (Commodities control) – Prices of major pulses, such as Tur, Urad, Chana, Kabuli Chickpea, Masoor, Moong and White Pea headed northward for the week ended 10th April, 2021 amid mills’ buying activity on immediate crushing requirement.

Weekly Highlights

# France White Pea Exports Surge by 2,070 MT in February M/M. Export shipments during the month totalled 12,440 MT, up from the 10,370 MT shipped the previous month but down 20% from the 15,590 MT shipped the same month last year.
# Australia Chana Exports Down To 87,751 MT in March M/M.
# Canadian Masoor Exports Higher in March M/M.
# Canadian White Pea Nearly Unchanged in March M/M, Green Pea Down.

Burma Lemon Tur:

Tur Lemon variety of Burma-origin gained, for second straight week, by Rs 300 to Rs 6,700-6,750/100Kg in Mumbai, due to mills’ buying on immediate requirement for crushing.

Moreover, demand and sale counters in Tur dal reported good action this week.

Meanwhile, the demand in tur dals has stalled at higher rates due to new restrictions however tur supply remains equally tight.

Similarly, domestic variety of Tur was also up by Rs 150 to Rs 7,250-7,275/100Kg in bilty trade at benchmark market of Akola.

As on April 6, 2021, NAFED has procured 10982.31 MT of Tur at MSP of Rs 6,000 in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

As per market sources, Tur prices are likely to get support as sellers were inactive. Fundamentals of Tur are strong due to lower yields, lesser old procured stock with government. Although, overseas imports will arrive at regular intervals as the government already issued a total of 6 lakh tonnes quota.

Burma Urad:

Prices of Burma Urad FAQ variety extended rise, for second straight week in a row, by Rs 200 at Rs 7,350/100Kg in Mumbai, due to millers' trade on immediate requirement for crushing despite overseas supplies at Chennai.

Similarly, Burma Urad FAQ-SQ varieties in Chennai also moved higher by Rs 150-250 at Rs 7,350/100Kg and Rs 8,050, respectively.

Burma Urad FAQ-SQ varieties traded around $721-$725 per ton & $835, respectively on CNF basis for Chennai against delivery before 30th April. Good parity in import was seen. Ready stock of imported Urad at Chennai is around 1500-1700 containers.

Centre extends the last date for import of 1.5 Lakh MT of Urad for the fiscal year 2020-21, from 31st March, 2021 to 30th April.

Chana Kantewala (Indore):

Chana prices moved up for second straight week by Rs 350 at Rs 5,400/100Kg in Indore following firm cues from futures, due to improved buying activity on immediate requirement for crushing as demand and sale counter in dal-besan witnessed this week against ongoing arrivals.

Meanwhile, demand for Chana dal and besan witnessed limited. However, prices are likely to get support due to lower output and on expectations of better demand during the forthcoming festival season amid lower inventories due to complete lockdown in some of key consumption centres because of rise in covid cases again.

Chana procurement initiated by NAFED has put pressure on spot availability of chana for the processors and stockists looking to accumulate chana stocks.

As on April 6, 2021, NAFED has procured 1,79,523.19 MT of Chana at MSP of Rs 5,100 in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Similarly, Tanzania-origin Chana in Mumbai also moved higher by Rs 400 at Rs 5,050-5,100/100Kg amid mill buying activity.

Sudan and Russia-origin Kabuli Chickpea prices traded higher by Rs 350-450 at Rs 5,200-5,400/100Kg and Rs 5,400-5,500, respectively.

Dollar variety Chana also ruled higher by Rs 500 at Rs 8,500-9,000/100Kg in Indore. Similarly, 42-44 & 44-46 count Kabuli Chana also sharply up by Rs 750-850 each at Rs 9,650/100Kg and Rs 9,500, respectively.

Imported Masoor (Mumbai):

Canada crimson variety Masoor along with Australia Masoor in Mumbai continued to trade higher by Rs 200-250 each at Rs 6,050-6,100/100Kg and Rs 6,200, respectively on improved mills’ buying support and depleting stock of imported Masoor.

Similarly, Canada crimson variety Masoor at Hajira-Mundra port are each up by Rs 225 at Rs 6,050/100kg and Rs 6,000, respectively, while at Kandla it was priced higher by Rs 250 at Rs 5,950/100Kg.

Demand and sale counter in processed Masoor witnessed good activity. Masoor dal traded higher at Rs 7,350/100Kg.

Consumption demand likely to increase due to cheaper masoor as compared with Tur. Amid lesser availability of Tur, crushing is more likely to shift towards Masoor.

As per market sources, depleting stock of imported Masoor and no further overseas supply due to higher parity are likely to support prices further. Corporates and importers continue to accumulate stocks in the domestic market and shifted towards crushing domestic Masoor due to less imported stock.

White Pea (Kanpur):

New White Pea prices gained Rs 200 at Rs 5,150/100Kg (dal quality) and Rs 5,300 (40% filter quality) at Kanpur market, due to good demand from local and outstation markets.

As per Kanpur based trader, prices of White Pea is likely to get further support due to negligible carryover stock. Millers-traders along with stockiest and bulk buying from big companies were active in purchasing as the pipeline is empty.

Moreover, imported White pea stock is also negligible after India banned import of the yellow peas. Customs department has not released the imported pulses yet, as the release will contradict government’s existing policy.

Moong (Jaipur):

Moong prices moved higher by Rs 200 at Rs 6,500-7,400/100Kg at Jaipur market of Rajasthan, as per quality, amid mill buying on immediate requirement for crushing.

Moreover, demand and sale counters in processed Moong reported good participation and traded higher by Rs 500 at Rs 8,700-8,800/100Kg.

New Moong traded at Rs 7,400/100Kg in Khirkiya market of Madhya Pradesh. Arrivals of new Moong is likely to improve from mid-April.

New summer Moong crop is expected to arrive from April end-May at Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Acreage expected to be remain higher compared to last year.

Farmers were still holding kharif crop Moong in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Arrivals and supplies stocked in godowns, meanwhile, are enough to offset current requirements.

The Central Government notifies annual quota for the fiscal year 2021-22 for import of 1.5 Lakh MT of Moong.
