NEW DELHI (Commodities control) Guar Korma, a by-product of guar seed is likely to become new hot commodity which can give a new high to entire Guar complex if domestic and international market have good respond to the products made from guar Korma. Guar Korma is already in good demand so it’s price bypassed guar seed.

One time Guar Gum turned to be hot commodity for Indian commodity sector but It began to fade during last few years due to new technical developments. Guar seed and guar gum prices came down. Therefore, farmers discouraged to grow the crop and acreage of guar seed fell down during last couple years. This year guar seed acreage further decreased by about 30-40 percent and the production is estimated to 50-60 Lakh bags (100 kg each).

According to market sources, now guar korma is going to be attractive by-product of guar seed. Guar korma price increased to Rs. 4050 per quintal which was sold at around Rs. 2500 per quintal around two years ago. Guar korma became costlier than guar seed itself which is hovering at Rs. 3800-3900 per quintal. Market sources told that guar korma is being used to produce protein products and food oil which are getting good response from domestic and international market. Guar Korma is being used for hair shampoo also. Husk of Guar seed is called guar Choori. While inner part of guar seed called guar gum split (Daal) which is used to produce guar gum powder for crude oil, food, cosmetic and pharma industries. Guar korma is a grain (Dana) found from guar gum split during processing. Currently, it is used as cattle feed extensively in India and abroad.

Jodhpur based leading guar gum product company Shree Ram Industries has developed protein and food oil from guar korma. The company’s chairman and CEO Mr. Om Prakash Soni had in interation with Mr. Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan on Wednesday during a web based event. He told the CM that his company has researched for last 3-4 year to develop these products. According to Mr. Soni, India has protein market of about Rs. 15,000 crore. CM has congratulated to the company for new products developments. He also suggested to get patent for these products when he was told that the company is pioneer to develop these products.

Mr. Soni told CM that If Jodhpur based guar industry succeeds to grab even 10 percent market, substantial business of around Rs. 1500-2000 crore can be expected. He said that foreign market including US and Europe also have great potential for these products. Newly developed Korma based products are fetching good price from the market. According to Mr. Soni, the company has started production on pilot basis. The response from domestic market is very good. The company established a plant to produce guar korma based products. It is expected to begin production by January, 2021. He told that foreign buyers has booked his entire production for next two year. However, the company has yet to get from approvals from FSSAI and other government’s agencies for marketing in big way

The development can give relief to Guar gum industry which is reeling under sluggish demand from the international market. Few year ago, crude oil exploration sector was major buyer for guar gum powder but new cheaper alternatives have ousted the guar gum product. Guar gum industry is facing serious challenges from the odds. Current economic crisis arise due to Covid-19 also made the thing worse for the industry. Presently, mere 10 percent guar gum powder is being consumed for crude oil sector. Rest 90 percent demand is coming from food, pharma and cosmetic industries. Food sector is biggest contributor of India’s guar gum export. In the absence of demand from crude oil sector, guar gum export declined substantially.
According to latest data released by APEDA, guar gum export reduced to 59,775 tons during April-June 2020. India had exported 116005 tons guar gum during same period of last year.
