MUMBAI (Commodities control) –Urad, Tur, Moong, Masoor, Chana and White Pea were headed southward for the week ended 25th July amid thin buying activity as demand and sale counters in processed pulses reported negligible participation due to cash crunch.

Trade volume has been scanty, as some markets are shut due to lockdown and labour shortage. Demand has been suffering due to closure of restaurants, small eatery joints, and big retail chains.

Farmers in 18 districts of Madhya Pradesh, who had sown kharif crops - Paddy, Millet, Soybean, Tur, Moong, Urad, Groundnut, will be staring at a huge loss if the monsoon continues to play truant for the next one week or so. The districts having deficient rains include Gwalior, Bhind, Datia, Guna, Shivpuri, Chhatarpur, Damoh, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Balaghat, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Katni, Dhar, Mandsaur, Shajapur and Hoshangabad.

Agricultural operations have been badly affected in Odisha, which recorded 30% deficit rainfall in the month of July. Farmers, who had started kharif crop early due to good rainfall in the first week of June, are now facing an uphill task to revive their crop plan. The situation worsened to such an extent that the seedlings have turned yellow.

Burma Lemon Tur:

Tur Lemon variety of Burma-origin, both old and new, gained Rs 125-150 to Rs 5,350/100Kg and Rs 5,500, respectively in Mumbai. But, millers participation reported negligible despite lesser availability of imported Tur stock.

On the other hand, domestic variety Tur eased to Rs 5,950-5,975/100Kg at benchmark market Akola.

India 2020-21 Kharif Tur Sowing Up 30.96 % as On July 22 at 36.8 Lakh Ha Vs 28.10 Last Year.

Millers are cautious in purchasing Tur at prevailing rates, as they may face disparity because of weak demand in dal from consumption centers.

Government agencies are selling old raw Tur to the mills for processing, packaging and supply of processed Tur under PDS.

Millers are getting parity in crushing raw Tur for conversion, from the Government. Also millers are selling dals for government tenders.

As per market view, Tur prices are likely to get support due to slow pace of seasonal good quality arrivals. Also, active participation at the demand and sale counter of dals is expected from 1st week of August. Supply from Mozambique is expected from September. Government is yet to give any quota to millers and refiners.

Bumper Kharif Moong crop is likely to pressurize buyer sentiments in Tur.

New crops will likely arrive from September end in domestic markets.

Chana Kantewala (Indore):

Chana prices were almost unchanged at Rs 4,200-4,225/100Kg in Indore following weak cues from futures, thin mill buying and ongoing arrivals.

Actual demand in chana dal and besan from consumption centres was reported to be slack. Meanwhile demand for besan has been suppressed throughout lockdown.

Millers reveal that demand for besan has tanked 80% so far. Nearly 60% of chana produced in the country is used for making besan and around 55-60 Lk tons of besan is produced annually. Until two years back, 30% of yellow peas were used in making besan. However it is negligibly used now. This year, however, chana is unlikely to be supported even with this factor under consideration.

Traders reveal that 70% of besan is consumed at the hotels, restaurants, weddings, parties, sweetshops and in preparation of temple offerings and savoury-snacks. Since end of March with enforcement of lockdown and restrictions, the demand has been near-to-nil.

Sentiments are dampened due to Nafed’s liquidation and free distribution of grains every month under PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, till November end. However, Nafed is not interested in liquidating its stock below Rs 4,500/100Kg.

Interestingly, despite weak demand and consumption overseas imports are active. Tanzania Chana is being imported at $545/Ton for Nhava-Sheva/Chennai and $550/Ton for Kolkata.

It is to be noted that amid corona virus scare, Ganesh festival will not be celebrated in Maharashtra, which will be another big blow to besan demand that generally spikes during festivities. Market is uncertain about forthcoming Diwali demand as well.
