Mumbai (Commodities Control) – Government’s castor sowing progress data reveals that castor acreage is lagging by 8% so far at 6156 hectares in the producing belts.

In parts of castor-sowing regions of Gujarat, the acreage is lagging by 64%, as on June 22nd, at just 275 hectares. During the corresponding period last year the acreage in the state had touched 756 hectares.

Meanwhile in the castor-growing regions of Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh as of 25th June, acreage was recorded at 500 hectares and 961 hectares, down 87% and 53% from last year, respectively.

In Telangana, meanwhile, castor acreage has touched 4420 hectares so far.

In its final crop estimate released this month, trade body Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) revised its castor crop outlook for the year 2019-20 downward by about 3.5% to 19.62 lakh tonnes.

Per the final estimates, castor output in the country will be lower by about 15,000 tonnes from 19.77 lt reported in 2018-19.

The best sowing time is immediately after onset of monsoon in kharif season. The optimum time is from second fortnight of June in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other Southern States.

The best time for sowing in Gujarat and Rajasthan is first fortnight of July. Delayed sowing leads to reduced yields.
