MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Australia's Chana exports dropped by 22% in January, compared to the previous month (December 2017), According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The export of Chana stood at 62,781 metric tonnes (MT) in the month of January 2018, lower from 80,161 MT in December 2017.
The fall in exports reflect the impact of the tariff imposed by India, which is currently at 60%. January sale to India stood at 675 MT compared to 21,000 MT in December 2017. Australian market assume that India will not indulge into new trades for the next 6 to 8 months.
While, India being the largest consumer of Chana, better demand for the commodity was witnessed from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Chana exporters are also looking for new markets like Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.
The harvest of Australia Chana for the 2017 is estimated at 8 to 9 lakh tonnes. Whereas, assumptions of almost half of the produce is already exported by the country.
