India Rabi Acreage Reaches At 430 Lakh Ha, Reverse Urbanisation Lead To Higher Sowing

NEW DELHI (Commodities control) India may reap advantage of reverse urbanisation in Rabi season in term of higher production and higher agricultural growth. The government had to impose strict lockdown to contain spread of Covid-19. Lakh to workers had to face difficulties but their engagement in agricultural activities in their native village lead to higher acreage in Rabi season after recently concluded Kharif sowing season. As per report released by union ministry of agriculture, total area coverage under rabi crops has been reported on 430.59 lakh ha. against 414.41 lakh ha area during the corresponding period of last year, thus increase in area coverage by 16.18 lakh ha compared to last year in the country. Overall trend of Rabi sowing progress is very good and it is expected to achieve the targeted area of the state as discussed with the States.



Wheat



About 204.41 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to last year (202.72 lakh ha). Thus 1.68 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Madhya Pradesh (7.10 lakh ha), Gujarat (2.33 lakh ha), Maharashtra (1.85 lakh ha), Punjab (0.99 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.29 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.24 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.20 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.02 lakh ha) and West Bengal (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Rajasthan (4.97 lakh ha), Haryana (4.42 lakh ha), Bihar (1.86 lakh ha), Jammu & Kashmir (0.12 lakh ha) Uttar Pradesh (0.08 lakh ha) and Assam (0.02 lakh ha).



Rice



About 9.57 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to last year (9.97 lakh ha). Thus 0.40 lakh ha less area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the State of Kerala (0.26 lakh ha), Odisha (0.01 lakh ha) and Karnataka (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Tamil Nadu (0.39 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.25 lakh ha), Assam (0.03 lakh ha) and Telangana (0.01 lakh ha).



Pulses



About 116.56 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to last year (102.99 lakh ha). Thus 13.56 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (7.10 lakh ha), Gujarat (4.17 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.81 lakh ha), Odisha (0.70 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.66 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.62 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.59 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.58 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.19 lakh ha), Telangana (0.17 lakh ha) and Assam (0.03 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Andhra Pradesh (1.11 lakh ha), Bihar (0.25 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.22 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.20 lakh ha), Haryana (0.18 lakh ha), Jammu & Kashmir (0.06 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.04 lakh ha) and Punjab (0.01 lakh ha).



Coarse cereals



About 33.00 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to last year (35.57 lakh ha). Thus 2.57 lakh ha less area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (1.56 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.02 lakh ha), Odisha (0.01 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.01 lakh ha) and Jharkhand (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Tamil Nadu (0.65 lakh ha), Assam (0.57 lakh ha), Bihar (0.49 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.44 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.42 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.40 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.38 lakh ha), Telangana (0.36 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.18 lakh ha), Haryana (0.12 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.08 lakh ha), Himachal Pradesh (0.06 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.01 lakh ha) and Jammu & Kashmir (0.01 lakh ha).



Oilseeds



About 67.06 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to last year (63.15 lakh ha). Thus 3.91 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Rajasthan (1.55 lakh ha), Jharkhand (1.31 lakh ha), Haryana (0.53 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.41 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.32 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.31 lakh ha), Odisha (0.28 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.20 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.08 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.08 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.06 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.01 lakh ha) and Tripura (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Telangana (0.47 lakh ha), Bihar (0.31 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.12 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.11 lakh ha), Assam (0.08 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.04 lakh ha), Jammu & Kashmir (0.04 lakh ha), Punjab (0.01 lakh ha) and Himachal Pradesh (0.01 lakh ha).



As on 03.12.2020, actual rainfall received in the country is 108.7 mm against normal of 108.0 mm i.e. departure of (+)1% and as reported by Central Water Commission, the live water storage available in 128 reservoirs in the country is 94% of live storage of corresponding period of last year and 120% of storage of average of last ten years.
