Mumbai, 24 January 2025 (Commoditiescontrol) Fast-fashion retailer Shein has instructed its contract manufacturers to source cotton only from approved regions, explicitly excluding China, for products sold in the United States, its largest market. This policy is part of Shein’s adherence to the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act (UFLPA), a U.S. law aimed at banning products linked to forced labor from entering the country.
The company identified approved cotton sources as Australia, Brazil, India, the United States, and, in limited cases, certain nations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia. Shein outlined this sourcing policy in written evidence submitted to a British parliamentary inquiry, which was made public on Friday.
The UFLPA targets goods tied to forced labor, particularly from China’s Xinjiang region. Shein’s compliance underscores its commitment to navigating regulatory requirements while securing its competitive position in the U.S. market.
