NEW DELHI (Commodities control) Wheat prices slumped today in Rajasthan and Gujarat as demand was very weak. The prices were stable in other mandis despite lower arrival. According traders, farmers were trying to hold their wheat crop for sale to government on MSP of Rs. 1975 per quintal.

Wheat prices slipped in Baran mandis of Rajasthan. New Duplicate Sharbati (Tukdi or 4037) wheat of upper quality lost Rs. 125 per quinta. The priced came down from Rs. 1750-2050 to Rs. 1750-1925 per quintal. New mill quality wheat also came down by Rs. 50 per quintal. Last season’s mill quality wheat slipped Rs. 20 per quintal. Kota, Bundi and Rajkot (Gujarat) mandi also noted sluggish price trend in wheat. Total arrival was 14,000 bags in Hadouti region of Rajasthan. New wheat arrival was around 7000 bags in the regions.

Wheat arrival was lower in Madhya Pradesh mandis as farmers were trying to hold their crop. The arrival reduced from 1.5 lakh bags to 1.25 lakh bags. The arrival was down from 30,000 bags to 20,000 bags in Bhopal division. Traders said that lower wheat prices were discouraging farmers to bring their crop. They wanted to hold their stocks to sale to government on MSP which is about Rs. 325-375 per quintal higher than current market price.

Despite lower arrival, the prices remained stable or sluggish as flour millers were also facing poor demand of wheat products. Millers were least interested to book fresh buying. According to traders, millers are also substantial stock of last season. They were waiting for market clues. A trader from Indore said that market will take direction after government’s procurement from April. The prices were stable in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi where new arrival yet to start. Millers were cautious for buying of old wheat.
