Mumbai (Commodities control) - Prices of most of the varieties of chilli in Guntur were quoted weaker, while mixed price trend was witnessed in chilli mandi of Warangal. Guntur market registered arrivals of 10,000 bags on Monday vs 50,000 bags last week. Chilli markets have reopened after an extended holiday on account of pongal last week.

It is to be noted that the price of export variety ‘Teja’ was unchanged in Guntur and rose by Rs 5 in Warangal on Monday.

Meanwhile No.5, Singenta and 341 red chilli varieties gave up Rs 3-10 per kg in Guntur. Meanwhile in Warangal mandi, DD variety edged up Rs 2 per Kg, while 341 lost Rs 8 per Kg amid arrivals of 7,000 bags of red spice . Other varieties were unchanged in both the mandis

India's chilli production in the current season 2020-21 (Jul-Jun) is seen at 1.7 mln tn, 10-15% higher than the previous year, according to trade estimates.

Andhra Pradesh is the top chilli producer, accounting for around 45% of the country's crop, followed by Telangana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. And the carry forward stocks of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana combined are projected at 120,000-140,000 tn, according to trade estimates.

Meanwhile, key export destinations like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China and Indonesia are buying cautiously as the shipments are getting stuck because of the COVID-19 restrictions.

On the domestic front too, demand from restaurants for red chilli powder is weak as people are still reluctant to eat outside.

However, market participants said that weather could play an important role. Any adverse change in the coming months could act in favour of chilli prices.

Prices of chilli in Indore, the key trading centre in Madhya Pradesh, were steady on Friday. However, prices are likely to decline in the near term due to supply of the new crop.
