NEW DELHI (Commodities control) North India’s majority millers have exhausted their monthly sale quota. Other mills did not increase selling prices. Sugar prices steadied today in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana after steep price rise in last couple of days. But higher demand pushed up sugar in Kolkata while mixed trend prevailed in Mumbai. Stable trend continued in Kolhapur and southern India.

As per market source, around 70-80 percent sugar mills of UP, Haryana and adjoining regions have sold their monthly sugar sale quota. But some traders questioned and said that festival demand is hardly half of last year and the government had released higher quota then how their monthly sold out. They doubted it was gimmick to jack up prices which was already spurted by Rs, 150-200 per quintal in last two weeks.

M grade Sugar price rose Rs. 10 to Rs. 3630-3650 per quintal in Kolkata where festival demand increased. According to the traders, retailers were buying and stocking sugar ahead of Diwali. Sugar demand was not at par of last year on Durga Puja but it was strong enough. Now, retailers have to restock their needs. In Mumbai market, S graded sugar lost Rs. 10 to Rs. 3222-3282 per quintal but M Grade gained Rs. 6 to Rs. 3282-3452 per quintal. Steady trend remained intact in southern markets as demand was weak.
