Mumbai (Commodities Control) - Fifty-six traders have been caught trying to con their way through Centre’s urad import quota by submitting false declarations. The conning came to light during spot verification, of the existence of manufacturing units of the import authorisation holders, by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). DGFT has taken these supplies in its custody along with canceling the licenses of these traders.

Customs Department has been duly informed about the findings by DGFT.

Commodities Control is in possession of a letter written to us by Deputy DGFT N. Vaidyanathan of Chennai Customs, which details the spot verification conducted by DGFT during July.

According to import norms, only mills are allowed to import pulses, for which these dal mills are required to submit the details of their processing capacities along with the import application.

However, there were 56 applications with false declarations and the Government has now cancelled their import licenses. These firms will not be able to import pulses in future.

According to the letter written by DGFT to Chennai Customs, Government is initiating punitive action as per FT(DR) Act against these 56 firms. Customs has been requested ‘not to allow import of urad dal” against these 56 import authorisations.

It is to be noted that Centre allowed Urad import quota of 4 Lakh tons, deadline to which ends by 31st August 2020.
