Mumbai (Commodities Control) - Madhya Pradesh government claims to have procured 106-110 million tons of wheat at MSP from the farmers across the State. The procurement has gone beyond the target of 100 million tonnes, although further procurement may be affected due to labour problems and acute shortage of HDPE and jute bags.

According to government sources, bags for 6.4 million tonnes of wheat are available with the government, while orders have been placed to accommodate another 4 million tonnes of wheat.

Complaints have been received from various procurement centres in Madhya Pradesh that in the absence of HDPE, jute bags and scarcity of labours during lockdown, the weighing of wheat is getting delayed by several days, thereby forcing farmers to stay outside procurement centres for 5-6 days in a stretch, said a farmer Sitaram of nearby Deepalpur tehsil.

In the absence of HDPE and jute bags, complaints of excess weighing of wheat per quintal have also been reported from Sagar and Vidisha districts. Many farmers at these centres have alleged that officials in charge, at the procurement centres and ware houses, are weighing 600 to 700 grams of excess wheat from them, per quintal.

In the absence of bags we are literally being exploited, said a wheat trader Sanjay Agrawal.

Production of wheat in Madhya Pradesh this year has been estimated to exceed 200 million tonnes this year. Due to lockdown, the date of beginning of procurement of wheat in Madhya Pradesh was extended from March 15 to April 15.

As per earlier schedule the last date of wheat procurement in MP had been fixed on May 26. However, due pressure from the farmers ' bodies, the same has been extended beyond June 15 so as to accommodate maximum number of farmers to sell their crop.
