MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Spot jeera prices ruled steady at the major Unjha and Rajkot markets in Gujarat on Tuesday amid limited demand and supply.

Arrivals today stood at 6,000 bags at Unjha and 700 bags at Rajkot. At Unjha mandi, the price of rough jeera was at Rs 2620-2,670 while the price of NCDEX variety ruled at Rs 2,770-2,870/20 kg.

According to traders, the overall sentiment is weak as sharp increase in acreage in Gujarat and Rajasthan and favourable weather conditions across the growing regions may lead to rise in production.

Meanwhile, total area sown under jeera/cumin in Gujarat, the largest producing state, was at 4.88 lakh hectares as on January 20 in the current 2019-20 rabi season, up 40.36 percent or 1,40,282 hectares from 3.48 lakh hectares over the year-ago period, as per the state agriculture department's data.

Jeera for delivery in March at the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) ended lower by Rs 170 or 1.14 percent at Rs 14,740 per quintal.
