NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) – Heavy rainfall and flood in parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to have damaged around 25 percent of the standing soybean crop in 2019-20 (Jul-Jun), the state's farm department Director Mukesh Kumar Shukla said on Friday.

"On the basis of initial reports, floods and very heavy rains in most of August and September have damaged the standing soybean crop by around 25 percent. The highest damage is expected in Ujjain division," he said on the sidelines of the National Conference on Agriculture Campaign-Rabi 2019.

Around 40 percent of the soybean crop is seen damaged in Ujjain, Neemuch, Dewas, Shajapur, Ratlam, Mandsaur, and Agar Malwa districts of the Ujjain division, he said.

The output of the oilseed is also "badly affected" in Bhopal, Indore, Vidisha, Dhar, Harda, Hoshangabad and some other districts in western part of the state, he said.

The state government has sent a number of teams to conduct a survey of the damage in the affected areas, and a report on this is expected on Tuesday, he said.

Rains have not only dropped flowers of the late sown crop, but also increased chances of germination of seeds inside the pods. Both the cases lead to high loss in yield, Shukla said.

Waterlogging in some regions is also posing the threat of decay in plants, he said.

The area under soybean in the state is around 5.52 million hectares, against 5.32 million hectares last year.

Madhya Pradesh accounts for over half of India's soybean production. In 2018-19, the country produced around 13.8 mln tn of soybean.

The state has seen losses worth 80 bln rupees to the soybean crop, another official with the state farm department said.

Rains are expected to subside in the coming days, which may prevent further damage to the crop, Shukla said.
