NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - India received 38 percent more rainfall than the 50-year average in the week ending on Wednesday, September 18, data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed.

The rainfall surplus was also at 38 percent for the week ended September 11.

Above-average monsoon rains for the week ended September 18 have increased the overall surplus in the country since the start of the season to 5 percent from 3 percent last week.

This year rains arrived in the southern state of Kerala a week late on June 8. The southwest monsoon has covered the entire country on 19 July, against its normal date of 15 July.

The official monsoon season in the country starts on June 1 and ends on September 30.

Monsoon rains are crucial for farm output and economic growth, as about 55 percent of India's arable land is rain-fed, and agriculture forms about 15 percent of a USD 2.5-trillion economy that is the third biggest in Asia.
