MUMBAI(Commoditiescontrol) - The arrival of raw cotton has begun in markets of Southern Haryana and Fazilka district in Punjab.

Arrivals of around 200-250 quintals cotton of the new season is seen in the Northern States. Around 150-160 quintals for new crop arrivals were observed in Fazilka District of Punjab. Rest is scattered in Haryana’s Sirsa, Palwal, and Abhor markets. Approximately, 100-150 quintals arrivals were noted in Haryana.

However, the quality is said to be inferior. As per sources, these arrivals are a result of early sowing. The moisture content is at 16-17%. The Spot price of new crop stood in the Range of Rs. 5400 – 5450 per Quintal. The prices are expected to strengthen, most traders said.

Production is expected to be higher in Northern states compared to last year. The area under cotton has substantially increased in Punjab and Haryana. In Punjab, the total area under cotton is at 4.02 Lakh Hectares up by 41.5% compared to previous 2.84 Lakh Hectares. Similarly, in Haryana, it rose by 1.65% at 6.76 Lakh Hectares compared to previous 6.65 Lakh Hectares.

The cotton arrivals will peaks by mid-September in North, ahead of other zones in India. Rains may briefly affect cotton arrival in the North but it is expected to boost yield and control pest attacks like whiteflies.
