Western FSU Wheat Weather - Jan 3

West and South Russia (Central Region, Black Soils region, Volga valley, 
Southern Russia) 
Highlights: Mostly dry or with only a little light precipitation favoring 
western and southern areas during the weekend period. Temperatures above 
 Days 1-3: Mostly dry during this period. Temperatures above normal. 
 Days 4-5: Mostly dry. Temperatures average above normal. 
Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus 
Highlights: Light to moderate precipitation with locally heavier through 
central areas of Ukraine and portions of Belarus during the 4 day holiday 
weekend period. Light precipitation to the west, little to the east. 
Temperatures averaged above normal. 
 Days 1-3: Mostly dry today. Dry or with only a little light precipitation 
tomorrow or during Thursday. Temperatures average above normal. 
 Days 4-5: Mostly dry. Temperatures average above normal Friday. The northwest 
turns colder Saturday, the balance of the region remains warmer Saturday. 
    Cold weather in the southern plains puts the wheat crop into dormancy. Some 
subzero temperatures over the weekend but not cold enough to cause any 
significant damage. Dry weather is expected to continue. 
    Recent rainfall and some snow will help recharge soil moisture through key 
winter wheat areas of Turkey. 
    Mostly favorable conditions, at this time for winter wheat in Ukraine and 
south Russia. Fall rainfall has helped recharge soil moisture in key growing 
areas, after late summer dryness and heat. Wheat is likely dormant in most 
areas at this time. 
    Mainly favorable conditions for winter wheat through Europe at this time. 
Dryness and drought had been of concern in Spain and in Italy. Italy had heavy 
rains during the fall which should have ended any further concerns over dryness 
issues. Spain has also seen an increase in rain activities during the past few 
week weeks. However Spain is need of more rain and better coverage. 
   No significant concerns for the harvest of winter wheat in Australia at this 
   Colder temperatures through the North China Plain will ease winter wheat 
into dormancy. 
   A recent increase in rainfall through the drought areas of Morocco and 
western Algeria will help to ease stress to winter grains. However, more rain 
is needed to end drought like conditions. A continued more favorable weather 
pattern for winter grains to the east, although colder weather will slow 
   Mostly favorable conditions for winter wheat in Pakistan and north India at 
this time. However, more rain will be needed as the crop enters reproduction 
during the coming weeks.
