WORLD GRAIN PROSPECTS

Mostly favorable conditions, at this time, for slow development of winter
grains in southern Ukraine and south Russia. Recent rainfall has helped
recharge soil moisture in key growing areas, after late summer dryness concerns
and heat. Winter grains are entering dormancy from northern Ukraine northward.
Mainly favorable conditions for planting winter grain and development
through western Europe at this time. Recent rains have slowed planting progress
in the east while improving soil moisture following drier and hotter late
summer weather. Dryness and drought has been of concern in Spain and of some
concern through Italy. Spain had showers early last week but more rain will be
needed to end the drought. Italy had heavy rainfall during the week which
should end any further concerns at this time.
Dryness in east-central Australia delayed the early planting effort for
sorghum. Rainfall during October provided needed soil moisture and irrigation
through much of the region but especially through the south Queensland areas.
Improving prospects for planting and early development.
Late season rainfall through India will have favored development of the
Kharif sorghum crop, especially in previously dry areas in and near
Maharashtra. Late season rainfall also improved irrigation and soil moisture
supplies in winter sorghum areas. Recent rains in the far south may be somewhat
unfavorable for the harvest of summer crops and the planting of winter
varieties.
