WORLD WHEAT PROSPECTS

Favorable conditions for pre winter development of winter wheat in most
areas of the southern Plains although it is turning drier in Oklahoma and west
Texas.
Favorable conditions for filling and maturing wheat in central Argentina.
Recent rainfall through key winter wheat areas of Turkey will help improve
conditions for establishment of this crop, following earlier drought conditions
in the area. Additional rain and snow will during this week will further
improve soil moisture for this crop.
Mostly favorable conditions, at this time for winter wheat in Ukraine and
south Russia. Recent rainfall has helped recharge soil moisture in key growing
areas, after late summer dryness concerns and heat. Wheat is likely entering
dormancy in most areas at this time.
Mainly favorable conditions for winter wheat development through western
Europe at this time. Recent rains slowed planting progress in the east while
greatly improving soil moisture following drier and hotter late summer weather.
Dryness and drought had been of concern in Spain and in Italy. Spain has had
showers and cooler weather recently but more rain is needed to end the drought.
Italy has had heavy rains which should end any further concerns over dryness
issues.
Drier, warm to sometimes hot weather favors maturing winter wheat and the
harvest in Western Australia. Recent showers in northern New South Wales and
southern Queensland may delay the harvest for a time. Rain also fell in South
Australia during the past week, possibly aiding any late filling wheat but more
likely coming too late for wheat and being unfavorable for the maturing crop.
Mostly favorable moisture for development of recently planted winter wheat
through the North China Plain. Colder temperatures may slow development
somewhat at this time.
Dryness and drought is of increasing concern for winter wheat areas of
Morocco in northwest Africa.
Dry weather will favor planting progress for winter wheat in north India and
Pakistan at this time. These crops reply mostly on irrigation and supplemental
moisture during the January and February time from as cold fronts enter from
the north.
