WORLD WHEAT PROSPECTS

Cold weather in the southern plains puts the wheat crop into dormancy.
Subzero temperatures early next week bear watching for any potential
winterkill. Dry weather is expected to continue.
Recent rainfall and some snow will help recharge soil moisture through key
winter wheat areas of Turkey.
Mostly favorable conditions, at this time for winter wheat in Ukraine and
south Russia. Fall rainfall has helped recharge soil moisture in key growing
areas, after late summer dryness and heat. Wheat is likely dormant in most
areas at this time.
Mainly favorable conditions for winter wheat through western Europe at this
time. Wet conditions through parts of eastern Europe are of some concern for
winter wheat. Dryness and drought had been of concern in Spain and in Italy.
Italy has had heavy rains during the fall which should end any further concerns
over dryness issues. Spain has also seen an increase in rain activities during
the past few week weeks. However Spain is need of more rain and better
coverage.
Showers during the past week may have briefly delayed the wheat harvest in
Australia but conditions improved again after that.
Colder temperatures through the North China Plain will ease winter wheat
into dormancy.
A recent increase in rainfall through the drought areas of Morocco and
western Algeria will help to ease stress to winter grains. However, more rain
is needed to end drought like conditions. A continued more favorable weather
pattern for winter grains to the east, although colder weather will slow
development.
Recent showers in Pakistan and northwest India will favor development of
recently planted winter wheat in the area. These crop areas reply mostly on
irrigation and supplemental moisture during the January and February time from
as cold fronts enter from the north. The region has turned drier and warmer
again during the past week.
