WORLD RICE PROSPECTS

Widespread and heavier rainfall through much of Indo China during the past
couple of weeks with improve soil moisture and irrigation for planting of the
main rice crops in the region. The heaviest of these rains occurred in
Thailand.
In the Philippines an increase in scattered shower activity has recently
helped to maintain soil moisture at favorable levels for planting and early
growth of rice.
Increasing shower activity in east and south India will help improve soil
moisture for planting of the Kharif rice crop. Rice planting continues in
northwest India in a heavily irrigated region of the country. Planting will
increase as seasonal rains become more widespread.
Mostly favorable conditions at this time for reproductive to maturing early
crop rice in China. Early rains will also favor vegetative single crop rice at
this time.
Warmer temperatures and recent shower activity will improve conditions for
planting rice through Korea and in Japan at this time. However, more rain is
needed in some locations.
