North Africa Winter Wheat Weather - Apr 3

3 Apr 2017 7:20 am
Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia
Highlights: Dry or with only a few light showers through northeast areas during
the weekend period. Temperatures above to well above normal west, above to
slightly below normal east.
Days 1-3: A few sprinkles or light showers may occur in Tunisia during this
period. Mainly dry elsewhere in the region. Temperatures above or well above
normal in the west, near to below normal in the east.
Days 4-5: A few light showers with isolated heavier during this period.
Temperatures trend somewhat cooler during this period.
Very timely and beneficial rains are expected during the next 5 days in the
southern plains. This will improve conditions for developing what where crop
ratings have been deteriorating due to hot/dry weather depleting soil moisture.
Mostly favorable conditions for developing winter wheat in the southeast
Midwest and Delta states.
Winter wheat in west and central Europe is reported to be in fair to good
condition at this time. Reports suggest that winter wheat has broken dormancy
in western Europe about a month ahead of normal. Generous rains through key
growing areas of France and Germany during March should ease concerns over
winter dryness and favor the vegetative crop. Showers in eastern Europe favor
greening crops at this time.
Winter wheat in east Ukraine, west and south Russia is reported to be in
good to excellent condition at this time. Crop development is running at up to
4 weeks ahead of normal. Short term dryness is of some concern for wheat areas
of South and west Ukraine (25-50 percent of normal past 60 days).
Mostly favorable conditions for winter wheat through east-central China at
this time. Rain has occurred through southern areas recently with some light
precipitation in the north as well. Wheat is likely nearing reproduction at
this time.
Wheat in Pakistan and north India benefited from significant rain and cool
temperatures late in January, especially any winter wheat that was reproductive
at the time. Additional beneficial rainfall has been reported during March as
Periodic showers through winter wheat areas of northwest Africa has supplied
favorable moisture for most of the key growing belt. Wheat is vegetative to
flowering at this time. Prospects are good to excellent, especially in Morocco.
