TOKYO--Japan's domestic sales of new cars, trucks and buses increased 10.8% in December from a year earlier, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Thursday.

Sales for the month totaled 264,938 vehicles, the association said.

Separately, sales of minicars with an engine displacement of up to 660cc rose 1.7% over the past year to 132,598 vehicles, the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association said.

Auto sales, as measured by vehicle registrations with the government, are monitored by economists since they are the first consumer-spending numbers released each month.
