WORLD WHEAT PROSPECTS

Soil moisture is decreasing in the southern plains of the US. However wheat
crop conditions remain nearly unchanged from a month ago due to limited crop
moisture needs at this time of the year.
Favorable soil moisture for the winter wheat crop in the southeast Midwest
and Delta states.
Winter wheat in west and central Europe is reported to be in fair to good
condition at this time. Reports suggest that winter wheat has broken dormancy
in western Europe about a month ahead of normal. Early winter cold may
contribute to above normal winterkill in parts of east Europe but this will
probably not be fully known until the spring. Dryness has recently become of
some concern in France but recent and forecasted rainfall should have ease this
concerns.
Winter wheat in Ukraine, west and south Russia is reported to be in good
condition at this time. Temperatures have recently warmed considerably leading
to a rapid snow melt and even some greening of grains in the extreme south
areas.
Mostly favorable conditions for dormant winter wheat through east-central
China at this time. Snow and rain has occurred in the region recently. This
will provide soil moisture for the crop as it breaks dormancy during the
spring.
Wheat in Pakistan and north India benefited from significant rain and cool
temperatures late in January, especially any winter wheat that was reproductive
at the time.
Periodic showers through winter wheat areas of northwest Africa has supplied
favorable moisture for most of the key growing belt. Wheat is vegetative to
jointing at this time. Prospects are good to excellent, especially in Morocco.
