WORLD WHEAT PROSPECTS

Mostly dry weather continues in the southern plains with no significant
precipitation in sight. The crop is mostly dormant at this time. No damaging
cold weather is indicated during the next 10 days.
Wintertime rain and snow will help recharge soil moisture through key
winter wheat areas of Turkey, in areas where the ground is not yet frozen. Snow
cover has been increasing due to added precipitation and colder temperatures.
Mostly favorable conditions, at this time for winter wheat in Ukraine and
south Russia. Fall rainfall helped recharge soil moisture in key growing areas,
after late summer dryness and heat. Wheat is likely dormant in most areas at
this time. A deep snow cover is evident over portions of the area due to recent
storms.
Mainly favorable conditions for winter wheat through Europe at this time.
However, reports suggest that crop may not be as winter hardy as it should be
due to recent warmth. Winter time showers in Spain will help to replenish soil
moisture for winter wheat, after early season dryness. Italy had heavy rains
during the fall which should have ended any further concerns over dryness
issues.
No significant concerns for the harvest of winter wheat in Australia at this
time.
Colder temperatures through the North China Plain is not a threat to dormant
winter wheat.
Increasing rainfall through the drought areas of Morocco and western Algeria
will help to ease stress to winter grains. A continued more favorable weather
pattern for winter grains to the east, although colder weather will slow
development.
Dry, warm weather in winter wheat areas of Pakistan and north India at this
time. Wheat will rely more heavily on irrigation. However, more rain will be
needed when the crop enters reproduction during the coming weeks to supplement
irrigation.
