Favorable conditions for developing winter wheat in the southern plains due
to an active rainfall pattern. Heading progress is running ahead of normal in
Texas and Oklahoma and is just getting underway in Kansas.
Mostly favorable conditions for developing winter wheat in the southeast
Midwest and heading wheat in the Delta states.
Spring wheat planting is running behind normal in the northern Plains
except in South Dakota,
Winter wheat in west and central Europe is reported to be in fair to good
condition at this time. Reports suggest that winter wheat is in vegetative
growth in western and northern areas, in or near reproductive growth stages in
Spain. Recent dryness in western Europe is of increasing concern, especially
for more advanced crops in Spain.
Recent rainfall through western and central Ukraine will help improve
prospects for winter wheat in vegetative growth stages at this time. Prospects
remain favorable elsewhere in Ukraine and also in west and south Russia at this
time. Colder temperatures will slow development.
Mostly favorable conditions for winter wheat through east-central China at
this time, although it may be somewhat dry in eastern Shandong province. Wheat
is likely in reproductive growth states at this time.
Wheat in Pakistan and north India benefited from significant rain and cool
temperatures late in January, especially any winter wheat that was reproductive
at the time. Additional beneficial rainfall has been reported during March as
well. Wheat is likely being harvested at this time.
A turn to hotter, drier weather through western areas of northwest Africa is
likely to increase stress to reproductive to filling winter wheat. Wheat is
jointing to reproductive elsewhere in north Africa. Prospects are favorable in
the east and mixed through central areas, still good in the west despite recent
dry and hot weather.
